Honest answers to the usual questions
What is a true cost calculator?
A true cost calculator shows what a purchase really costs over its life — not just the advertised price. TrueTotal adds every hidden cost (taxes, fees, insurance, fuel or energy, maintenance, extras sellers leave out) and subtracts what you can expect back at resale, giving one honest figure: the true total.
How is total cost of ownership calculated?
Total cost of ownership (TCO) = advertised price + every ownership cost over the period − resale value. Each input is taken from a named source with a date and a confidence grade (FACT, SOURCED or ASSUMPTION), and the calculation is published in full, so you can check every line.
Read the full methodology →Why is the true total higher than the advertised price?
Because the advertised price is designed to look small. Hidden fees — resort fees, baggage charges, booking fees, taxes, delivery, running costs — routinely add 20–60% on top. TrueTotal shows those lines before you commit, not on the final checkout screen.
Is TrueTotal free to use?
Yes — free, no sign-up, no paywall. The site earns a disclosed affiliate commission on some outbound links, at no extra cost to you. That commission never changes a ranking.
How we make money →Can a company pay to rank higher on TrueTotal?
No — at any price, from anyone. Rankings are computed from true total cost, quality and verified impact before any commercial data is consulted. This is the core promise of the service and it is enforced structurally, not just stated.
How independence is enforced →What does it cost to charter a yacht or a private jet, really?
Far more than the headline rate: a yacht charter typically adds ~30–35% APA (provisioning), taxes and crew gratuity on top of the base price, and jet quotes often exclude repositioning, catering and de-icing. TrueTotal itemises those lines — and unlike broker calculators, it has no sales motive behind the number.
